About the Program:

Purpose:
    To raise literacy scores on school based testing, for primary-grade students from selected public schools in Mountlake Terrace.
Goals:
    To assist children who would otherwise not have the resources to obtain tutoring in reading.
   To assist children in poverty.
   To assist children who are English Language Learners.
   To provide two days a week of 3-4 hours each day of after school programming.
   To provide a substantial nutritious snack.
   To obtain enough computers/lap tops for children to use for their homework and school projects.
   To provide tools to complete homework assignments.

The Students hold materials made available by a grant from the Seattle Baptist Union.

It's time to begin getting ready for the beginning of our second year of Wings To Reading. Several have asked what we might need to help the program – so here's a listing of some of the items we could use.

Long Sleeve Flannel Shirts and/or Zip Front Sweat Shirts
   These should be size children's Small or Medium(may be in used, good condition)
Bean Bag Chairs
Large Floor Pillows
5'x8' Group Reading Rug (orange-ish)
Leapfrog TAG Reading System and books (check titles first)
4 to 6 Cube Storage Unit
Student Book Boxes (check re: colors)
Shower Caddies (check re: colors)
3-Shelf Book Case
Sturdy Book Ends
Magnetic Letters (not numbers)
4-slice Toaster (For Staff)
We will also be ordering books-on-tape through Scholastic Book Club
   (This is much cheaper and returns points to us for free books to Wings)
Of course cash donations are always welcome and are tax deductable
Since our logo is the Butterfly it would be nice to have a few things with butterflies on them.
 The first page is a Registration & Interest Form where you can tell us Who You Are and How You Would Like to Help.

The second is a two-page Disclosure Statement (page 1, page 2) required of anyone who works with or may have unsupervised access to children under 16 years of age.

The Identified Need:
 This is a critical time for our children and schools, especially with limited resources and increased requirements for school improvement.
As hard as our schools and teachers work, we still have too many children who are not achieving in school.
The vast majority of these students are reading below grade level.
According to school district data, most of the students who are struggling to achieve are from low-income families or English is their second language.

In discussions with school principals, it became apparent that there was a tremendous need for reading support for many of our elementary children.
The Wings To Reading program was developed to provide that support for disadvantaged struggling students who attend elementary school in the city of Mountlake Terrace.
Our Commitment:
 We believe that strong relationships between schools, families, church groups and the community at large are necessary if schools that serve low-income children are to help young people graduate ready to succeed in life.
The First Baptist Church of Mountlake Terrace is building just that type of strong relationship with the schools in our community.

Our Program:
 Wings To Reading provides high quality, personalized reading support, instruction, and enrichment as well as offering students one-on-one relationships with caring adults in an extended learning day.
An extended learning day provides opportunities for meaningful experiences and helps prevent unhealthy behaviors after school.
The support offered within the framework of the Wings To Reading program will have a remarkable impact on the self-esteem and academic success of the students.
Too often only those children whose families can afford extended day programs get the help they need.
Wings To Reading closes this gap!
